Beard Jams: Cape Cod by Boy Goliath

Happy Friday everyone! Who’s doing something super exciting tonight?! I don’t have any plans, so who knows what will happen. I do know that for at least four minutes, I’ll be pleasantly entertained by todays song. “Cape Cod” by Boy Goliath!

This track is really nice. It’s fun, light, and relaxing. That being said, it’s also very danceable! If this song is what it feels like to live in Cape Cod, then send me there right away!

I love the instruments and sounds used in this track. I enjoy how the guitar and electronic beats work with each other. I think guitar with electronic beats can be hard to pull off, and Boy Goliath has done this very well. All of the instruments combined create a wonderful track.

Overall, I really enjoyed this song. It’s a refreshing track for anytime of the day. This song will definitely be stuck in my head for today, but in the best way possible. There are so many enjoyable things in this song, it’s hard not to like it and dance to it. Until next time, have fun and stay safe everyone. Keep on dancing.

Beard Jams: Into My Eyes by Vanilla

Hello once again everyone. I’ve been relaxing today and starting to think/look for jobs once I graduate from college! It’s exciting, but also pretty nerve wrecking all at the same time. Despite that, let’s keep dancing to some awesome music. Here is “Into My Eyes” by Vanilla.

This track is incredibly funky. Lots of fantastic electric bass riffs in this track. I personally love good bass parts in songs. This bass part is fun and catchy. Fun and catchy describe this song as a whole as well.

Let’s not forget about the electronic aspects as well in this track. They compliment this track very well. The electronic beat and shakers really help bring this song into 2014. There is also use of high and low cut filters once in a while, which create for some cool dynamics.

Overall, this is a great track! This will keep you dancing over and over again. In my opinion, it’s so fun and catchy, what more could you want from it? Until next time, have fun and stay safe everyone!

P.S. Our very first podcast comes out tomorrow, (January 9th, 2014), on our site! We are super excited about it, and can’t wait for you all to hear it!

Beard Jams: Speak To Me by I The Mighty

What’s going on everyone?! It is super cold here today. To warm up a little bit today, I thought we’d switch genres up a bit by listening to this sweet alternative rock track entitled “Speak To Me” by I The Mighty!

This track starts off with tons of energy! This track has a great sound just from the instruments alone. The guitars have a nice tone to them, as well as the drums. I also admire the softer section right before the first chorus. It definitely helps the chorus feel even bigger and more energetic then it is already.

Speaking of the chorus, it’s awesome! I love the vocals in the chorus. (And in the whole song as well). My favorite part in the chorus is when he goes up in pitch on the word “up”. It’s a nice extra energy push on top of a great chorus.

Overall, I really enjoyed this track! I’ve always loved alternative rock, and this track furthers that enjoyment of this genre. Additionally, this band is touring for some of the dates on this years Warped Tour! (Sadly, they won’t be at any of the dates I might attend.) Check this one out and see what you think! Until next time, have fun and stay safe…and warm. Stay nice and toasty.

Beard Jams: Dream Ache by Lone

Happy Monday everyone! I hope everyones day has been as good as it can be. My house is losing heat, and it’s supposed to be the coldest it’s been this winter tonight. Awesome. Anyways, today’s song we have is called “Dream Ache”. It’s by an artist known as Lone.

This track is pretty cool. Lot’s of synths and bass. I love synth and good bass, so no complaints here. How can I complain about a song when it sounds like I’m being transported through a sea of stars?!?!

There are lots of neat samples in sound that are sure to please your ears and musical tastes. One of my favorite sounds in this track that you might not expect to hear in this song is the sound of a hand drum and shaker! It creates a unique sound when paired with all of the electronic elements.

Overall, this is a really cool track! If transporting through a sea of stars sounds awesome to you, then check this one out. Even if that does not sound awesome to you, check out this track anyways! It’s a really nice, chill electronic track with great sounds incorporated into it. Until next time, have fun and stay safe everyone!

Beard Jams : The Mystery by Bad Cardigan

I’m back with another song! Who said more music was ever a bad thing? Especially on a Friday. This one is a new one from Bad Cardigan, (Who we have had on the blog before). It’s entitled “The Mystery”.

Right off the bat, we have a lovely acoustic sound to this track. All of their songs have a lovely acoustic sound, but this one seems to be the best one yet from Bad Cardigan. (In my opinion at least). The guitar parts are really nice together and intertwine with each other in a wonderful fashion.

Vocals are killer on this track! The harmonies are amazing! These two singers voices mesh very well together. I also admire how there are parts in the song, usually a transition, where they just sing without any instruments for a few seconds. It adds dynamic to the song, and makes it a little “Mysterious” at times…Pun totally intended.

Overall, this is a fantastic track from Bad Cardigan. In my opinion, you can really tell all aspects of this band have improved. The songwriting, the singing, everything! It’s really nice to see such tremendous growth from this band. As always, I’m very excited to see where these guys go from here. Until next time, have fun and stay safe everyone.

Beard Jams: Take Your Rest by Battleships

What’s going on everyone?! We are going to switch things up a bit today with a nice indie rock song called “Take Your Rest”. It’s by a band named Battleships.

The intro is hauntingly beautiful. It’s very peaceful and dream like at first. I don’t know why, but I envision this band playing this song in the snow, especially the piano part. I think it would be pretty cool, but that’s probably because I have snow on my mind. (We got around 8 inches of snow at my house yesterday).

Back to the song though, it’s a beautiful piece of work. When all of the guitars and drums come in, it really gives the song some energy and intensity.

The vocals are really nice as well. Fits in with this song very well. Additionally, I loved all of the “oh’s” in this track. Some are very smooth and relaxing, while others are full of indie rock passion.

Overall, I really enjoyed this track, especially on this cold winter day. Check it out, and see what you think! Take care everyone.

Beard Jams: III/IV by Star Slinger

Hey everyone! Let’s keep the good times rolling in 2014 with “III/IV” by Star Slinger!

Right from the beginning, you know some seriously awesome music is about to happen. I love the opening to this track. It introduces us to some of the key sounds right away. It only gets better from here.

The song this track samples sounds fantastic when paired with all of the electronic beats and synths! The chorus really had me dancing. It’s so great, I can’t help but dance! (Maybe that should be my tagline of 2014 so far…I can’t help but dance!).

I also love the voice/synth thing I hear. I don’t really know exactly what it is, but I like it. It sounds pretty sweet in this track. (It’s in the beginning and end of the track)

Overall, I’m really enjoying this track. Play this over and over, and keep on dancing. Until next time, have fun and stay safe everyone!

Beard Jams: Big Moon by ODahl

Happy New Year everyone! I hope your 2014 has been treating you all well so far. I’m excited for 2014. Like any other year, it’s going to have its challenges, but I think it’s going to be equally as fun. I also graduate from college in May. That’s crazy to think about. Anyways, while I’m over here thinking, check out this really funky track entitled “Big Moon”. It’s by ODahl.

This track just wants to make me dance! (Insert mini dance break here). I personally don’t see a better way to start off 2014 then by dancing. This track has a really catchy beat, and some great synths. There are also some nice sections with some sampled synth voices.

You can definitely hear all of the different layers of this track. Each time I listen to it, I feel like I’m being exposed to a new sound. These types of tracks can be hard to make since there is so much going on, but ODahl pulls if off nicely.

Overall, I really enjoyed this track. It’s a great way to start off your 2014, and it will make you dance. Until next time, have fun and stay safe everyone!

Musicbeards Top 10 Albums of 2013!

This year was a great one in terms of new music. It was very hard to compose this list. In lieu of that, just check out albums that were made in 2013! If you want to focus it down a little, check out our list!

1. Spreading Rumors by Grouplove

This album is pure magic. From start to finish, you will be dancing and singing the whole time. There is so much emotion and love put into this album, and it definitely shows. Lyrics are wonderful and can be very applicable to one’s life. This album is full of energy and life, how can we not fall in love with it? It is a little different from their first release “Never Trust A Happy Song”, but I believe it is a good change. Change might be the wrong word. I believe this album shows a lot of growth from the group. There is a little more experimentation in this album, as well as the use of more electronic sounds. Some might see this as a bad thing, but I think it fits in with their sound so well. Additionally, I saw Grouplove live not long after the album was released. Their live show was amazing. Definitely one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen, and one of the best nights of my life so far. Even this far after the release, I’m STILL singing lines from songs off of this album. It’s absolutely wonderful. I’m hooked on this album. This is why Grouplove’s “Spreading Rumors” gets number one on my list this year. Pure magic and maximum fun.

2. Paradise EP by Cub Sport

Here is another album that is filled with fun. I really fell in love with all of the keyboards and the vocals in this EP. (Side note, I know some might not like it, but I count EP’s as albums for lists like this. Sorry, not sorry). This is another album filled with lots of danceable moments. There is also a nice balance between upbeat and down tempo moments. The upbeat moments are really nice and fun. The down tempo moments are emotional, and I mean that in a good way. This band can pull off both feelings really nicely. I also saw these guys live this year, at the 2013 CMJ Music Marathon in NYC. They were awesome live. They have a nice, friendly, and fun presence on stage. I’m excited to see where these guys go in the coming months and years.

3. Phantogram EP by Phantogram

I was really excited when this EP. was released. I’ve loved Phantogram ever since my friend URRLLL turned me on to them. I saw them live last year, in 2012. They put on a wonderful live show. Anyways, back to this EP. It has the classic sound I’ve come to love and expect from Phantogram. That being said, I think there are some really powerful and dynamic moments. I think this EP truly shows that Phantogram is bringing it. There are some really nice and big chorus sections as well. As always, vocals are lovely in this EP. Smooth and haunting at times, especially during verses. Chorus vocals are big and emotional. Overall, fantastic EP. I’m really excited for their new album entitled “Voices”, which comes out February 18th.

4. Talon of the Hawk by The Front Bottoms

This was another album I was hooked on for a while. However, I was late to the party on this album. That being said, who cares? As long as you discover something, and you like it, what does it matter if you don’t discover it right away? Anyways, this is a fantastic indie rock album. One thing I loved about this album was how genuine these lyrics were. I felt like they painted an accurate picture of life. Truthful lyrics not sugar coated by false realities. I have lots of respect for them that they were able to be so truthful, and make some fantastic songs. Fantastic album. I really want to see these guys live. Favorite tracks included, but were not limited to : Au Revoir, Skelton, and Twin Sized Mattress.

5. Afraid of Heights by Wavves

I almost forgot that this album was made this year! A fantastic indie rock/punk album. I love how unapologetic the vocals are. Straightforward with nothing to lose. I mean that in the best way possible. I also really liked the backup vocals. The oh’s in this album were incredible. This album had some of my favorite guitar riffs I heard this year. I’ve always been a fan of indie rock and punk, so this album was a refreshing change of pace for me for a while. Great album. Favorite tracks include, but are not limited to: Afraid of Heights, Sail to the Sun, Lunge Forward.

6. Heart Of A Lion EP by The Griswolds

This was a really nice, and fun album. Non stop dancing for me during this album. At times, it reminded me a lot of Walk The Moon, but it also distinguished itself from Walk The Moon as well. Percussion parts were really cool, and could really get you into a song. Vocals were awesome in this album as well. Overall, a great album that I played over and over that you need to check out if you have not done so already.

7. Just Movement by Robert DeLong

I really enjoyed this album. This was another album I spent so much time enjoying, that I almost forgot that it was made in 2013! This is a beautiful album that got me through some gloomy days during my spring semester of college. I really admire the dance/ electronic vibe from this album. Mix that with some indie rock mentality and some awesome percussion, and bam. You have “Just Movement” by Robert DeLong. Lyrics were also really good in this album. Very thoughtful and emotional. Robert DeLong is another artist who I want to see in concert, but have yet to see. I look forward to when I might get to see him perform live. Definitely check out this whole album. It definitely make me fucking dance (If you listen to the album, you will get that last statement).

8. Hawaiii by Said The Whale

This album was really nice. It was one of those albums that I enjoyed listening to the whole album in one setting rather than listening to a few songs at a time. There are a few songs on here that i really liked and could listen to at any time, but a majority of the album I needed to listen to in order. I don’t know why, but that’s just how it was for me with this album. That being said, this album is still fantastic. This album has that indie rock, get up and go and cruise around on the highway with the top down vibe. At least, that’s the vibe I get from it. There are some really nice chorus sections on this album. Favorite tracks include, but are not limited to: Mother, I Love You, and Willow.

9. Black Ocean EP by Highly Suspect

This album was awesome. In this album, we have some full throttle alternative rock. This album will make you feel like you are going 110mph down a highway in the desert. I’ve said this before, but the lead singers vocals definitely help define this groups sound. They are so emotional that you really feel what he is talking about. Every time I listen to this EP, I can’t help but jam out with it…even if it’s just air drums and air guitar. I’ve known these guys since their self-titled album, and have had the pleasure of seeing them live twice now. I can’t wait to see what else is in store for this band. Favorite tracks included: Lydia, and Bath Salts.

10. Say What You Mean by Allison Weiss

I was hooked on this album for a little bit in 2013. Being the hopeless romantic that I am, this album really pulls on my heartstrings. All of the songs are wonderful. The album felt really applicable to me at times. I love the indie rock sound she has paired with the soft and wonderful synths. She also has a nice unique voice, which is pretty cool. I want to hear what her voice sounds like when she’s happy. The whole album conveys thoughtful, and sad emotions. (Which is not necessarily a bad thing).  I look forward to future releases from Allison Weiss…and maybe a happy song.

Bonus album: Sun Shy by Dresses

I hopped on this album bandwagon way too late. How late you may ask? I heard about it when it was released, but just had time to listen to it a few days ago. (I’m sorry, Dresses). I really like what I hear from this group. Most of the tracks were really refreshing and delightful. I especially enjoyed the dynamic between the female and male lead vocals. Really cool stuff that deserves to be listened to.

2013 was a pretty awesome year filled with extreme highs and lows. Have a Happy New Year! Here’s to 2014! (I graduate college in May! Woah!)

Beard Jams: Tereza by Trails and Ways

Hello everyone! Post is going up earlier today than normal because I’ve got some stuff I have to do when I normally post. Anyways, todays track is called “Tereza”, and it is by Trails and Ways.

This track has a really nice sound to it! I really like how I feel like you can hear two different songs in the track, but they blend together so well to make one really nice track. (Two songs would be an indie pop vibe with the electronic beats and drums, bass and guitar for an indie rock song).

The vocals are nice as well. Very smooth and thoughtful. It pairs well with the rest of the instruments. Vocals are almost dreamy too, which at times the song feels very dream like to me.

Overall, this was a cool track! Definitely check it out, and share with those you love! Until next time, have fun and stay safe everyone!

Beard Jams: Desire (Radio Edit) by Silver Swans

I’m back once again with a sweet song! Hooray! This one is entitled “Desire (Radio Edit)”. It’s by a band named Silver Swans!

This track is fantastic! Lots of indie pop charm to keep you going and intrigued throughout the whole song. I love the vocals in this song. They are very smooth and have a crystal like quality to them.

I love synth sounds, so I’m in love with this track. Lots of cool background synths, as well as some cool interlude synths about two and half minutes though the song. Synths paired with a nice electronic beat make for some great indie pop. In my opinion at least.

Overall, I thought this was a really great track! Definitely listen to this one. It is pretty fantastic. Until next time, have fun and stay safe everyone.

Beard Jams: Wax by L W K Y

Hey everyone! Hopefully everyone had an awesome week! It’s also Friday, which means fun times are to be had in the near future. Anyways, this fun track we have today is called “Wax”. It is by L W K Y.

I really like the build up of this track. The soft synths with the vocals are really nice. I also enjoyed the tom drums in this track. Nice and big tom sounds.

The main beat of the song is awesome. I can definitely get behind this beat and enjoy it. I really enjoyed how everything blends together so well. It makes for a nice warm and inviting track.

Overall, this is a nice track to enjoy! This one is best enjoyed over and over again. Seriously, hit repeat. The more I listen to this track, the more I like about it. I feel like I hear something different every time I hear it. Sit back, and enjoy this track.

Beard Jams: Madrugada by Trinidad

Welcome back everyone! I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday. My holiday was lovely, although the snow showed up a day late. Thanks, Mother Nature! I’m just kidding, I love snow. I’ll take it when I can get it. You know what else I like? Awesome music of course! This track is entitled “Madrugada”, and it is by Trinidad.

I love how this track is wonderfully simple. It’s nice to hear a song that is catchy, makes you dance, and is not overly complex. It’s refreshing actually. It’s a wonderful track to get back in to the swing of things after the holiday. Something about it has a warm and inviting appeal like the holiday is actually here, but it also feels like we are moving on from the holiday in this song. To paraphrase that weird statement: It makes me think of the holiday while making me feel like it’s time to move on.

I also really like the instruments and samples used in this track. It kind of has an afro-pop, hip-life flare to it in my opinion. I love the hand drums paired with the subtle electronic beats. It’s very pleasing, and has me dancing.

Overall, I really enjoyed this track! It feels very relaxing to me, and has a refreshing and crisp quality to me. Check this song out, and share it if you like it! Until next time, have fun and stay safe everyone!

Beard Jams: You’re Not Good Enough (Holy Ghost! Bootleg) by Blood Orange

Hey everyone! Did you really think that I would leave you guys with down tempo songs before the weekend? NO WAY! Not on my watch. This one is entitled “You’re Not Good Enough (Holy Ghost! Bootleg) by Blood Orange.

This song is just all kinds of awesome. I can’t even begin to describe how much I’ve fallen in love with this song. It all feels so right. The bass in this song is amazing. Everything mixed together sounds so good, I just can’t stop dancing.

Overall, and amazing song. On a danceability scale of 10, this one definitely exceeds that and gets at least a 15. It’s so funky, and so good. Indulge on this Friday night by listening to this song and sharing it with the ones you love. Don’t forget to share this blog with everyone you care about as well as a free Christmas gift. Until next time, have fun and stay safe everyone!

P.S. We’ve officially been a blog for a year! Happy Birthday to us! Time to party. Bye!

Beard Jams: Funeral Beds by The Districts

Here’s another cool song for you all. It’s a nice indie folk song entitled “Funeral Beds”. It is by a band named The Districts.

The intro is really nice. This song builds up very nice. It takes it’s time too, which is a nice change up from other tracks these days. I would say, this song keeps building up throughout the whole duration of the song. Once we get to the build up though, it’s magical. I’m not kidding, it’s absolutely magical. If you don’t feel anything by the end of the song, you might be a robot. Don’t get me wrong, robots are cool and everything, but you definitely want to turn on your emotions for this song.

I really like the singers voice in this song. Lots of emotion coming through his voice. My favorite moments are right before the build up about half way through the song, and once the song gets to the build up moment as well. His soft moments are dreamy, and his passionate moments is what any love sick person needs.

This is a really nice track. The beginning made me just sit back and enjoy everything going on. By the end of the song, I felt like I was really connecting with the singer…even though I’m not there with the singer at all. Definitely check this one out. Until next time, have fun and stay safe everyone.

Beard Jams: Can’t Shake The Feeling by Diamond Youth

Hey everyone! How’s it going? Hopefully your day has been delightful. I’m in a rut right now, so no delightfulness for me. Anyways, we are going to switch it up a little bit with some indie rock. Diamond Youth is back with their latest single “Can’t Shake The Feeling” off of their upcoming ep “Shake”.

I really like the vocals on this track. Fits in very well with the rest of the music. It sounds very smooth to me, which is something I have not heard lately in rock music. It’s a refreshing change.

Chorus sections are nice. I really enjoyed the last chorus in this song. Everything comes to a head at the end. It’s exactly what I needed at this very moment. The guitar riff is enjoyable as well. It’s a riff you can easily enjoy.

Overall, it’s a nice track! It reminds me of Queens Of The Stone Age, Weezer, and a little bit of Wavves. It’s a nice track to warm up to while jamming out. (My jamming out is dancing in my room. Your version of jamming may be something else. I do enjoy jamming as in playing the actual song on a musical instrument as well). Check it out, share the track, and share Musicbeards!

Beard Jams: Paris by Magic Man

What’s going on everyone?! Hopefully the holiday season is treating everyone really well. I’m running around trying to get gifts wrapped and ordered. Plus it’s my moms birthday today! She turns 50 years old today! Anyways, while I’m busy with my family, todays tasty jam comes from Magic Man! It’s entitled “Paris”.

I really enjoy the beginning with the piano. It’s such an awesome start to the song, and then it explodes into an awesome bass sound. This song will definitely keep you intrigued throughout the whole song. I really love the bass in this song. I also really like the vocals in this song. Great emotion captured through his voice.

I was so close to seeing Magic Man in October during the CMJ Music Marathon. I was literately there while the band before him was tearing down. However, I was really tired and had to be up early in the morning the next day, so i didn’t get to see him. The next time I’m presented with the opportunity, I’m definitely going to a Magic man show, and I’m staying there the whole time…even if I don’t have the energy for it.

Anyways, definitely check out this song and this group! I really enjoyed this track. Lots of emotion in this song. I was moving throughout the whole song. Awesome job. Until next time, have fun and stay safe everyone.

Beard Jams: Wabi Sabi by Deadbear

Here is another awesome track for you all to enjoy! This one is called “Wabi Sabi”, and it is by Deadbear.

There are some really nice sounds in this track. I really like the calm synth that is paired with all of the percussion parts. It really holds everything together in my opinion. I also really enjoyed the soft male vocals in this track. My favorite part was the “Oh’s” (At least that is what I think it is.) I don’t know how to properly describe another section I liked, but I’m going to attempt to. Rattle electronic breaks? (Or maybe a robot malfunctioning…yeah, let’s go with this one). Whatever you want to describe it as, I liked it. It definitely helped move the song along.

This track is a nice one to just sit back and admire all of the different sounds you hear. Feel free to get lost in this track, just make sure you have that repeat button on. I really enjoyed this track. It’s a nice track to relax to, or to wind up your night. Overall, a really cool track. Take care.

Beard Jams: Pretty Thoughts by Alina Baraz & Galimatias

Welcome back everyone. This track is entitled “Pretty Thoughts”. It is by Alina Baraz & Galimatias.

Let me just start by saying that this song is fantastic. It’s so relaxing and thought invoking. I’m a sucker for thinking about anything that has to do with love. (I admit, I even like romantic comedies). Hopefully this song makes you feel all warm and good inside, because that’s what I get from this track. However, I can also see this track being equally applicable to someone who just lost love.

The female vocals are amazing! I’m just melting in my seat hearing these vocals! I really enjoyed the parts where it goes back and forth between the female and male vocalist.

The music is really nice as well. I really like the bass beat in this song. It’s not overbearing and fits in perfectly with this song. There is also some nice background synths and noises as well.

Overall, this track is amazing. It fits perfectly with how I feel on a daily basis. It’s warm and inviting, and I just want more! I literately keep on hitting repeat and each time I’m in love with this song just as much as when I first heard it. Keep this one on repeat for a while, and just get lost in it. Amazing job.
